When most people think about breast augmentation the first thing that comes to mind is often implants. In many cases, breast augmentations are performed with silicone or saline breast implants to augment the size or shape of the beasts. However, there is another technique that many people may not be familiar with that involves the transfer of your body’s own fat to augment your breasts.
At North Texas Plastic Surgery, our Harvard-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sacha Obaid offers fat transfer breast augmentation in addition to the traditional procedures involving implants. This technique has gained popularity because it offers women a more natural approach to enlarging or reshaping their breasts. Because breasts are predominantly made of fatty tissue, for some women, using their body’s own fat is more appealing than placing synthetic fillers or objects in the body, and the fat also produces more natural looking and feeling breasts.
As with any breast augmentation procedure, the fat transfer method can help women address issues related to:
- Lost breast volume or shape due to pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Lost breast volume or shape due to significant weight loss
- Irregularly-shaped breasts
- Asymmetrical breasts
Not only is the fat transfer technique a natural alternative to breast implants but it also has the added benefit of removing fat from other areas of your body using liposuction. This means that you’ll not only see positive changes in the size and shape of your breasts but you’ll also see a reduction of fat in certain areas of your body such as your stomach, love handles, or thighs, which can help create a trimmer figure.
The fat transfer technique has advanced in recent years because of surgical technology that makes this procedure a safe, effective, and natural alternative to breast augmentation with implants. Once the fat is extracted from the body, it’s then processed to remove any impurities and fluids to ensure its safety once injected into your breasts.
Since this technique involves two procedures—breast augmentation and liposuction—it’s important to meet with Dr. Obaid in a comprehensive consultation to determine your candidacy for this procedure. He’ll use this time to assess, examine, and measure your body to determine if you have the proper amount of fat for transfer to produce the results you desire. Other important considerations for candidacy include:
- Medical history
- Current health
- Breast augmentation goals
It’s these factors that will determine if you’re a good candidate for breast augmentation with fat transfer. Once you’re cleared, the surgery itself can usually be performed in one day as an outpatient procedure. In general, you can expect to gain at least one to one and a half cup sizes from this technique, but results may vary depending on your current chest measurement and the amount of fat you have for transfer.
Recovery can up to least a week with many people being able to return to work and normal activities within a few days. Minor swelling and bruising may occur and pain medication can be prescribed to those who experience mild pain from either the augmentation or liposuction. Results may take up to a few months to be completely seen but once the transferred fat cells fully integrate with your breast fat cells, they’ll never need to be replaced and you can enjoy fuller, shapelier breasts for years to come.
