When recovering from plastic surgery, it’s important to take care of yourself, both physically and emotionally. While you’ll get lots of advice from your doctor and others on things to do during your recovery, there are also a few things you should not do.
While recovering from any procedure, avoid the following to promote healing and get back on your feet as your new-and-improved self:
Not Following Your Doctor’s Instructions
Doctors are trained experts in plastic surgery; the surgeon you choose should also be board-certified. They give you a list of recovery instructions for a reason. Not following their directions can have regrettable consequences.
Smoking or Secondhand Smoke
Though smoking is always bad for you, it is especially harmful after surgery. It compromises lung function and delays healing.
Lying in Bed
Your surgeon will usually give you specific instructions on the frequency and duration of walking after surgery. This doesn’t include vigorous exercise, which should be avoided for however long the surgeon recommends. Moving around also ensures that pain medication doesn’t leave you constipated.
Being Alone After Surgery
You may need some physical and emotional assistance for 48 to 72 hours after your procedure. Someone may have to help you walk around or get food and water, as well as serve as emotional support. It helps to have someone there to encourage you!
Dieting or Not Eating Altogether
Your body needs nutrition to promote proper healing. Your surgeon will give detailed instructions on the types of food you should eat and when. For example, certain procedures may require you to avoid spicy or hot foods or straws, but, generally speaking, you should eat normally.
Sunlight can prevent scars from healing properly, so avoid direct exposure after your procedure. Be sure to use a minimum of SPF 15 and wear a hat when outside.
Any procedure, particularly a more intensive one, can leave you with some doubts afterwards. Just remember: You decided to have your procedure for a reason, and you should continue to listen to that reason and not doubt yourself or your decision. You’re on your way to your best you!
